If you’ve been anywhere on social media this holiday season, you’ve seen them: crunchy, sugar-coated cranberries that everyone swears taste like sour candy. I finally tried them, and I’m here to report they are JUST as good as everyone says. Maybe even better! These candied cranberries are made with just 3 ingredients: fresh cranberries, orange juice, and powdered sugar. You don’t need a stove, a candy thermometer, or simple syrup. Just soak, shake, and dry.

The result is a bright, tart, snappy little bite that bursts with flavor, like a Sour Patch Kid meets a holiday cranberry. The orange juice adds the most amazing hint of citrus and the powdered sugar coating turns into a sweet, frosty shell that looks like fresh snow. They’re addictive straight from the bowl, absolutely gorgeous on a holiday table, and make the cutest homemade holiday gift.

Why You’ll Love These Candied Cranberries

  • They taste like sour candy. Each cranberry has a sweet, crunchy sugar shell on the outside and a tart, juicy pop on the inside. It’s the same sweet-then-sour combo that makes sour gummies so addictive, made with real fruit! I’ve caught everyone in my house sneaking handfuls from the fridge.
  • Just 3 ingredients, and no stove required. Most candied cranberry recipes have you simmering a sugar syrup on the stove and hoping your cranberries don’t burst. This version skips all of that! The cranberries soak in orange juice, then get tossed in powdered sugar. Your hands-on time is about 10 minutes, and it’s so easy kids can help.
  • They’re the perfect holiday table addition and homemade gift. These candied cranberries look like little sugar-frosted jewels. Pile them in a bowl as a snack, sprinkle them over a cheese board, use them to garnish cocktails, cakes, and pies, or pack them into mason jars with a ribbon for an easy, festive holiday gift. Everyone will ask for the recipe!

Sam’s Recipe Tips

  • Use cornstarch-free powdered sugar if you can. Most regular powdered sugar contains cornstarch, which can leave a slightly chalky or soapy aftertaste on the cranberries. Organic powdered sugar (usually made with tapioca starch instead) gives you the cleanest, sweetest coating.
  • Fresh cranberries work best. Fresh, firm cranberries stay crisp and snappy. Frozen cranberries can work in a pinch if you thaw them completely and pat them dry, but they’ll be softer and won’t have the same crunch.
  • Re-coat if needed. Over time, the cranberries release a little moisture and the sugar coating can look damp. Just toss them in another spoonful of powdered sugar right before serving and they’ll look freshly frosted again.
  • Make them close to when you’ll serve them. Candied cranberries are at their crunchiest within the first 2–3 days. For a party or holiday dinner, start the soak 2 days before, then coat and dry them the day before.
  • Gifting tip: Pack the candied cranberries into small mason jars or cellophane bags with a festive ribbon, and add a tag that says “keep refrigerated, best within 3–4 days.” For an extra-special gift, pair them with a jar of homemade granola or a bag of chocolate bark!
  • Save the orange juice! The leftover cranberry-infused orange juice is delicious. Use it in smoothies, mocktails, or a holiday sangria, or mix it with sparkling water for a festive spritzer.
  • Try a flavor twist. Swap the orange juice for apple cider, cranberry juice, ginger ale, or (for adults) prosecco. Or mix a pinch of cinnamon or a little citric acid into the powdered sugar for an extra-sour, extra-cozy kick!

3-Ingredient Candied Cranberries

Prep Time10 minutes
Cook Time5 minutes
Total Time1 hour 15 minutes
Servings8 servings

Equipment

  • 1 large bowl
  • 1 strainer
  • 1 baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 cups powdered sugar cornstarch-free recommended

Method

  • Rinse the cranberries and discard any soft or bruised berries.
  • Add the cranberries to a bowl or jar, pour the orange juice over the top, and cover. Refrigerate for 1-12 hours.
  • Drain the cranberries in a strainer, shaking off excess juice so they’re damp but not dripping.
  • Add 1 cup powdered sugar to a large lidded container, add the cranberries, and shake to coat. Add the remaining powdered sugar and shake again until every cranberry is fully coated in a white, frosty layer.
  • Spread the cranberries in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 225°F for 3–5 minutes to set the coating.
  • Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate. Enjoy cold!

Notes

  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. They’re crunchiest within the first 2–3 days. Re-toss in powdered sugar before serving if the coating looks damp.
  • Powdered sugar: Cornstarch-free (organic) powdered sugar gives the best flavor.
  • Frozen cranberries: Thaw completely and pat dry before soaking. They’ll be softer than fresh.
  • Flavor swaps: Use apple cider, cranberry juice, ginger ale, or prosecco instead of orange juice.
  • Naturally gluten-free and dairy-free.
